What Should Be Done If Eid Coincides With Friday?

If the day of Eid coincides with Friday—as is the case for Muslims in several countries of the world on this day, 1st Shawwaal, 1444AH (21st April, 2023)—whoever observes Eid with the imaam, the Jumu’ah prayer becomes Sunnah for him.

There are several marfoo‘ hadiths and mawqoof reports regarding this. One of such is:

The hadith of Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنهم), according to which the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) said: *_“Two Eids have come together on this day of yours, so whoever wishes, it [the Eid prayer] will suffice for Jumu‘ah, but we will pray Jumu‘ah.”_*

(Narrated by al-Haakim; also narrated by Abu Dawood, Ibn Maajah, Ibn al-Jaarood, al-Bayhaqi and others)

Hence, whoever prays the observes the Eid prayer may choose to go to the mosque and pray Jumu’ah or stay at home and observe zuhr. However, It is better to observe Jumu’ah.

It’s important to note that this hadith only applies to one who prayed the Eid prayer. Whoever misses the Eid prayer, the Jumu’ah remains compulsory on him.

As for the imaam, he has to be present for Jumu’ah to lead the Muslims who attend the prayer.

تَقَبَّلَ اللهُ مِنَّا وَمِنكُم

May Almighty Allaah accept from us and from you. Allahumma Aamiin.
